Joyce Chai is a professor in the Computer Science and Engineering division at the University of Michigan. She is an Associate Director of Michigan Institute for Data & AI in Society (MIDAS). She is also affiliated with Michigan Robotics Institute. Her research interests are in the area of artificial intelligence, particularly on natural language processing, situated and embodied dialogue agents, human-robot communication, and intelligent user interfaces. Her recent work has focused on grounded language processing to facilitate situated communication with robots and other AI agents. She received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Duke University.
